Freedom Update

September 14th, 5 months post surgery. Freedom is doing wonderfully! She has been to the dog park and back into the pond and swam for the first time since her operation. We bought her a float coat from
Ruffwear and she didn't mind it a bit. She's a little sea nymph when it comes to water. Her weight is back to normal, although that did take some time. Glory is no long afraid to go to battle inside or outside of the house and Freedom has learned to use her non leg as a battering ram. She's our little line backer now! Again, thank you all so much for your kind words and concern during the spring when we were all going through a dark cloud.

Post Surgery

Freedom's surgery was preformed at
AFFILIATED VETERINARY SPECIALISTS

A note of thanks to her surgeon Dr. Fiore
and to Dr. Haynes for their care and expertise
in helping us all through this uncertain time.

The red compression shirt is on day after surgery.
She was up and standing and seemed to be ok.
Friday when we brought her home was a whole other story.
Her first 12 hours back at home were the most horribly
painful time for her and for us to watch. Her pain patch
had to be removed prior to leaving because this was
causing some regurgitation, also not a good thing.

We battled to relieve her pain which did not come quickly
enough and between 4am and 7am before we could talk
to the Dr., again, we thought we might have to put her down.
Thankfully, that was not the case and she seemed to turn a corner.

By noon on Saturday we had her outside where she is the most happy.
I would like to say she is doing much better, and she is compare to
last Friday, but her back legs are in pain which keeps her down more
so than normal.

Thanks to all of you (friends, family and Doctors) who were a light
for Freedom and her family. We all appreciate your thoughts
and prayers more than you will ever know.

Freedom's Surgery

We decided to go forth with the surgery today.
The Dr. just called to let us know she is doing ok.
Photo was taken this morning in the office before I left.
Hopefully She can come home Friday.

What to do?

We took our Freedom to a specialist in another town to see what we could do for her. Her lungs are clear and most likely has not spread but the tumor continues to grow and cause discomfort. The downside to the surgery is her back legs are both shot. She will start to develop (if not already) arthritis and this will make it difficult for her to get up. We are still so torn. Ultimately, she will not die from the cancer but from the pain - from her tumorous front leg or the torn cruciate ligaments in the back legs if we take the forelimb. I just feel like if we amputate she could live years, and if not maybe only this year, but if we take her arm and her legs give out to compensate we are none the better. I don't know how I'm going to live through her pain. My heart is already breaking.

Update

Freedom's report did not come back favorable.
She was diagnosed with CHONDROSARCOMA.
Not a rare cancer, but not a common one.
It is cancer of the cartilage. We have opted not
to amputate since last spring her knees went out.
She is still recovering and cannot afford a missing
forelimb. We will keep her as pain free as possible
and hope to celebrate another birthday with her if
she is willing and able.

Days after Christmas I noticed a bump on Freedom’s leg.
It was hard and nubby like bone. I waited a week and
then another to see if there would be a change...
and there was. Her arm began to swell and become more
lump like. She was scheduled for a biopsy but I couldn’t wait any longer so I ushered her in for x-rays. Hopefully this would rule out my dreadful thinking. They could tell me, Oh, this is arthritis and no biop necessary. Turns out, not to be the case. The thoughts became reality right before my eyes - right under the lights of the glaring x-ray. It’s a tumor. The nature of this mass is yet to be determined. Freedom had her biopsy on Friday and now we wait. I hope anyone who stops by 2DogStudio today sends well wishes to her and we find out that the results did not warrant such thinking and she will be just fine. Thank you readers!

Oh the long awaited news!
Earlier this year I submitted two photographs
of Freedom and Glory to BARK Magazine for
the smiling dog contest. Take 1, Glory was acting
up and being a ham bone. I retook the photo with
them cooperating and yes, smiling and submitted
both photos. I thought Take 1 was so funny, even
though Take 2 was the one I was hoping would win!

Then editor wrote back:
I am so happy to announce that the photo you
submitted to Bark's Smiling Dog (or Cover Dog)
contest is under consideration for placement
in our book, DogJoy: The Happiest Dogs in the
Universe, to be published by Rodale in October 2009.
As the editor of the book and the magazine,
I have the double pleasure of not only selecting
the photos for this project but also in delivering
the good news to you. Although it is still up to
the publisher to make the final decisions,
I am hopeful that yours will be included.
If your dog's photo appears in the book,
it will be in a chapter called THE JOKERS.
For your participation, you will receive a copy of
the hardcover book, and a three-year subscription
(or renewal) to Bark.

Then months later I received this email!
We have good news for you. FREEDOM AND GLORY
made it into the final design of DogJoy,
in the chapter called JOKERS.
The design process (and its back and forth
with the publisher) took longer than we had hoped,

the Rainbow Bridge before coming to life on my canvas.

DOGS RULE EBAY AUCTION

This book was the one extra created to be auctioned off to benefit Bernie Berlin’s A Place To Bark animal rescue. The book contains different pages by 13 different dog artists from all over the country (including myself). Each page was created around the theme "Dogs Rule" and each artist chose how they wanted to interpret that theme. The size of the book is 8"x10" and it has a handmade, painted, canvas board front and back cover. It is bound with two annodized aluminum rings and has clear acetate divider pages that separate each artists page from the next. These divider pages also contain a photo of the artist as well as a favorite quote. The pages are either original works of art or high quality inkjet prints that have been hand embellished in some way. This book is truly a unique piece of art that any dog lover would treasure. The only other editions of this book belong to me and the participants who were part of the original swap. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this fat book go directly to A Place To Bark dog rescue.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments about the pumpkins. First, let me say how difficult these have been to photograph. I tried again on the first set in hopes to capture their true warmth. I felt like the first photograph came off incorrectly. Now, the new pumpkins are a bit lighter and brighter. Both paintings are a commission for the same person, so unfortunately they are not for sale.

To Varnish OR Not To Varnish...

This is an age old question, one I am trying to reckon. I understand that most (if not all) acrylic paints have some type of binding agent which makes adding a sealer of any kind a mute point. However, when adding a varnish to your completed piece, albeit gloss or matte, this does attract a more "finished" look. In the past, I have always chosen gloss. A choice I some times regret. While adding a varnish gleans of professionalism, sometimes it detracts, (I think) from the desire to want to touch the painting. (Not that you should ever do that!) Dogs have coats that command petting. When glossing it up, I feel like I've just sprayed a repellant and the tactile factor is lost. Do any other artists out there have this spinning issue? Your comments would be greatly valued. Thanks!!

A delight to look at and much more than a bunch of dog pictures. It features famous photographers and artists as well. The photos span over 150 year period and chronicles the life and times of man and dog. If you find yourself in any given bookstore, pick it up and thumb thru it... you might just decide you need to take it home! (Thick Paperback $14.99)

Grow Old With Dogs

When I am old...I will wear soft gray sweatshirts...and a bandana over my silver hair...and I will spend my social security checks on wine and my dogs.

I will sit in my house on my well-worn chair and listen to my dog's breathing. I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow..

When people come to call, I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs...and talk of them and about them...the ones so beloved of the past and the ones so beloved of today...

I will still work hard cleaning after them, mopping and feeding them and whispering their names in a soft loving way. I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat, like a jewel and I will be an embarrassment to all...especially my family...who have not yet found the peace in being free to have dogs as your best freinds...

These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall...and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep, to greet you as if you are a God.

With warm eyes full of adorning love and hope that you will always stay, I'll hug their big strong necks..I'll kiss their dear sweet heads...and whisper in their very special company...

I look in the mirror...and see I am getting old..this is the kind of person I am...and have always been. Loving dogs is easy, they are part of me.

Please accept me for who I am. My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives...they love my presence in their lives...When I am old this be important to me...you will understand when you are old...if you have dogs to love too.
